The American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA) is a Baptist denomination with roots tracing back to 1814, when Baptists formed the General Missionary Convention, often called the Triennial Convention, to support missionary work around the world.

The American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA) is a Baptist denomination with roots tracing back to 1814, when Baptists formed the General Missionary Convention, often called the Triennial Convention, to support missionary work around the world.
In the 1840s, a major conflict arose over slavery. Southern Baptists believed slaveholders should be eligible to serve as missionaries, while Northern Baptists disagreed. As a result, in 1845 the Southern churches withdrew and formed the Southern Baptist Convention. The remaining Northern Baptists continued their work through the Triennial Convention and later reorganized under several names, eventually becoming the American Baptist Churches USA.
ABCUSA churches have traditionally been concentrated in the Northern and Northeastern United States and were formerly known as Northern Baptists. Today, congregations can be found throughout the country.
- Congregational Autonomy – Each local church governs itself and retains significant freedom in matters of doctrine, ministry, and practice.
- Cooperation Rather Than Creedal Uniformity – Unity is based more on shared mission and ministry than on strict doctrinal conformity.
- Ecumenical Involvement – American Baptists generally work more closely with other Christian denominations than many other Baptist groups and are members of the Baptist World Alliance.
- Women in Ministry – ABCUSA churches ordain women, and many women serve as pastors and denominational leaders.
- Diversity of Views – The denomination includes both conservative and progressive congregations, though it is generally regarded as more moderate or mainline Protestant than many evangelical Baptist bodies.
- Social Engagement – American Baptists have often been active in issues related to racial reconciliation, social justice, poverty, and community ministry.
According to recent denominational statistics, ABCUSA consists of approximately 5,000 congregations and around 1.2–1.3 million members, although membership has declined from its historic peak, as has been the case with many mainline Protestant denominations.
The giving of tithes and offerings reflects a grateful heart that is willing to give back to God a portion of what He has given to us.
